Who was the elusive lesbian, nymphomaniac Countess Gamiani described in the turbulent and fiery pages of the 1833 erotic publication "Gamiani"? Very few people ever saw the work, yet France speculated for half a century on the identity of the authors.
"Gamiani" became such a rarity, that no bibliographer could give a precise description of it. There were rumors, which were later confirmed, that the poet Alfred de Musset was the writer and Achille Devéria, Head Librarian of the Department of Prints at the Imperial Library in Paris, was the illustrator. And was Gamiani de Musset's mistress, the tumultuous writer George Sand?
